Besides the standard popular local foods such as grilled ox tongue and zunda mochi (mochi with sweet edamame paste),
there are many other local specialties. Try Seri-shabu, which means shabu-shabu with locally grown fresh seri (Japanese parsley),
steamed rice with oysters, which includes plenty of large oysters from the sea,
and more of the seasonal foods of the region.

You can find the yellow curtain at the entrance of this restaurant in the Nakakecho shopping arcade. Among all the superb dishes made with local ingredients, the most special one is “Seri-shabu”, which means shabu-shabu with fresh seri (Japanese parsley). Seris are cut in three parts: root, stem, and leaf; each part has a subtly different enjoyable texture. Taste the nutritious organic-grown seri in the rich broth of dried bonito and kelp.

Amazing large oysters packed neatly and abundantly in a box.

This popular restaurant serves delightful local cuisine of all four seasons. Lots of gastronomes love its “Hokki clam rice” in spring, “Shako prawn rice” in summer, “Harako (salmon and salmon roe) rice” in autumn, and most of all, the winter’s specialty “Steamed rice with oysters”, which is a limited-time menu until the end of March. The oysters spread in a box-shaped steamer is a must-see.

Hot and flavorful combinations in an original dish based on authentic Sichuan cuisine.

A popular Chinese restaurant near Sendai station. Based on traditional Sichuan cuisine, it serves original creative dishes. The specialty “Mapo Yakisoba noodles” originated in the kitchen staff meal at a Chinese restaurant in Sendai back in the 1970’s. The chef, a former hotel cook, effectively uses Sichuan peppers and two kinds of Chinese chili bean sauce.

Richly-flavored, but not fishy fishermen’s food in Kesennuma.

A legendary restaurant of charcoal-grilled local foods from Miyazaki’s sea and mountains. There is also a big list of sashimi. Local customers never miss ordering “Mouka no hoshi” whenever it is on the list. This is sashimi of shark’s heart from the sea of Kesennuma, which used to be popular among local fishermen and spread to the public about 20 years ago. Its flavor is rich but not fishy, very good with sake.

Ox tongue is a must-eat and known nationwide as a local specialty of Sendai. This restaurant has been popular since its establishment 30 years ago. Among its novel and creative dishes, “Tan-shabu” (reservation required) is the most exquisite. Only carefully selected, high-quality ox tongue is served sliced thin to create an amazingly soft texture.

Under the concept of “Tradition and innovation of bread”, this boulangerie offers breads using unique Japanese ingredients in collaboration with traditional baking techniques from Paris. The masterpiece “Zunda Mont Blanc” is only available at the Sendai branch store. Croissant stuffed with zunda (sweet edamame paste) is accented with shredded Japanese ginger preserved in syrup. Mildly sweet and flavorful, a must-eat.
