Travel around Niigata to enjoy seasonal tastes.
An overnight trip in Niigata!

The service connecting Kansai and Niigata started in March 2018. To commemorate this launch, we traveled to explore the contemporary allures of Niigata City, which you can easily access from the airport in just about 30 minutes. A unique shopping street which has started to gather attention again, a farmer’s restaurant in a suburb where the city’s sophistication meets rural landscapes, and others… let’s look for the undiscovered Niigata of the current moment.

01. [DAY.1] 11:00

Tasteful shops run by young owners

gather in a retro row house.

Most of the market’s shops used to be closed, but young shop owners gathered to renew the market as a hip shopping destination. Hachimitsu plus, which deals antique sundry goods mainly from Niigata, Aotogama, which creates expressive tableware using glazes made of natural materials, and other tasteful shops line up along the retro street, creating a fun area to browse through. An event held on the first Sunday of each month, which is called Asaichi (morning market) from spring to fall, and Fuyuichi (winter market) during the winter, is also a great time and highly recommended.

Enjoy rice koji sweets

at a tasteful storehouse♡

This restaurant serves original ice cream and drinks using rice koji (mold used to ferment rice, soybeans, and other ingredients as a starter to make sake, miso, soy sauce, and other products) in a renovated storehouse originally built in the early Taisho period. All items are gentle to the body and have a natural sweetness. Its taste is addictive after just one bite. A long-established shop, Minemurajozo, is adjacent to the restaurant, where miso, stock bags, and other related items are sold.

A guest house built like a community space

where people can enjoy talking about their trip.

A guest house built in a renovated 90-year old house. It is unique not only for the four rooms which express the four seasons, but also the bar space, where you can just drop in without staying overnight. The open, undivided layout of the first floor follows the owner’s desire for it to be a place where “people can drink boisterously and make themselves at home even if they are meeting for the first time.” Of course it is a great place to stay, but you can also just stop by to talk about your trip and drink with friends you met in Niigata.

Experience the best rice, carefully selected

and prepared by the owner.

This popular rice is carefully cooked on a traditional oven using Koshihikari brand rice cultivated by a contracted farmer in Iwamuro and high-quality spring water from Gosen. While the premium rice is as fragrant and springy as you’d expect, the main dish is made with a little ingenuity. The ingredients are cooked over a charcoal fire with homemade koji used for pickling the fish. Enjoy the best marriage of flavors where umami and sweetness are combined.

A new cultural center where

long-established stores and new shops coexist.

A shopping street lovingly nicknamed “Kamifuru”, where about 100 shops line up on a 500m-long alley. Standing side by side are long-established stores like Kanemakiya, a Japanese-style confectionery established 146 years ago, and new shops like Himemizuki, which was opened by the owner Norie Ozasa in 2014 because she’s loved the old city scenery for a long time. They hold joint events from time to time.
