How about sampling easy and delicious local foods while taking a leisurely drive on the main island of Okinawa?
Soul food of Okinawa which you rarely see on the mainland,
local gourmet dishes loved for years, and evolved desserts — traditional local specialties arranged in a modern way—
their flavors paired with the island scenery spread outside your car window will surely be an unforgettable memory.

A progressively-arranged version of Okinawa’s soul food.

A popular store which boldly arranges one of the soul foods of Okinawa, rice balls with savory SPAM, thin omelet, and seaweed. There are several varieties of rice balls from standard options, such as pickled mustard leaves and kelp, to original creative ones, such as fried pork. The customers’ favorite that is unique to Okinawa is the “rice ball with bitter melon tempura, pork, and egg”. Dried bonito flake topping makes it taste like real goya-champuru (a dish of bitter melon stir-fried with pork, tofu, and other vegetables).

Enjoy the fresh seafood loved by fishermen to your heart’s content.

A restaurant near the fishing port of Hamahiga Island created “kani-mozuku tempura” to give people the hearty taste of seafood in mozuku seaweed and swimming crabs deep-fried with onion and carrot. Also try different flavors by dipping it in koregusu (Okinawan chili sauce) or soy sauce.

A rich creamy taste unchanged since it was first established.

An American cuisine restaurant along National Route 50 which looks like a diner from an American movie. Since its interior was designed based on a kitchen of a US military base, it will almost take you to a different country. The most popular menu item is the “homemade soup” which has been on the menu since the restaurant’s establishment in 1967. Of course you can taste it in the restaurant, but taking it out and sipping it by ocean is also recommended.

An unexpected combination of a rice ball and kamaboko.

An old-time favorite “Bakudan onigiri” by the long-established kamaboko (steamed fish paste) store established 98 years ago. This specialty was born in Itoman, known as a fishermen’s town, and originally made for fishermen so that they could eat with one hand while working on boats. A rice ball inside a kamaboko ball has 3 kinds of filling: salmon, miso, or pickled ume. Since freshly fried kamaboko is brought to the store from a nearby factory, you can always eat it hot.

A popular new Okinawan dessert which combines tradition and innovation.

A specialty store serving sata andagi (an Okinawan doughnut), the former “Kame Tempra” in Naha city has been relocated and renewed in 2015. Its second owner now makes modern style sata andagi. While maintaining its original flavor of dough using pumpkin paste, the owner has added new toppings such as fresh cream, toasted soybean powder, and ice cream. You can enjoy the classic flavor in a delightful snack. Freshly fried all the time, it has a nice crispy texture.
